Once a week, for over three thousand years, the people of God have taken space for celebration, rest, and refreshment. The Hebrews called this rhythmic practice of stopping sabbath.
Sabbath is a monument to the truth that you don’t need to hold everything, but that He holds all things with you. It is an active practice that trains the heart in the knowledge of God as the Good Father. It is a stopping, a pausing, a breathing, learning that, before He desires your fruitfulness, He takes great pleasure in your fullness and your joy.
Once a week through this year, therefore, there are no readings. No reflections. Nothing to be earned or done other than to receive life once again as a gift from the God from who all good things come.
So take some space, and let this day be one of holy rest to the Lord.
The following prayer, of which there will be one a week, may help to frame this.
Shabbat shalom.
Pray:
Father,
May this Sabbath day be greatly blessed.
Grant me to see each moment as a gift,
And, as I cast aside the pressures and expectations of my week,
To abide more deeply in the simple knowledge,
That before anything and everything,
I am greatly loved.
In Jesus’ Name
Amen.
